Sanford Middle School

Sanford Middle School, located in Minneapolis’ Longfellow community, serves 766 students in grades 6 through 8. The school employs 44 full-time teachers, giving it a student-teacher ratio of 17:1 ― the fifth best ratio in the district.

Special Programs

Sanford is a participant in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme and it offers a broad range of special after-school programs. These include everything from a bike club and co-ed soccer to a homework center, movie makers and cheerleading.

Sanford employs a family liaison and encourages parental involvement. Parents at Andersen appreciate the strong teachers, the rigorous curriculum and the band program.

School ratings site awards Sanford Middle School one star out of five and gives it three out of a possible 10 stars.

In 2014, Sanford ranked worse than 77.2 percent of elementary schools in Minnesota. It also ranked 4th among seven ranked middle schools in the Minneapolis Public School District.

About 39.4 percent of Sanford’s eighth graders met the standard on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment-III (MCA-III) math exams, while the state’s average was 59.7.

More than 48 percent of the school’s eighth graders met the standard on the exam's reading portion. While this is far lower than the state’s average of 55.7 percent, it beat the district’s average of 44.5 percent.
