Michael Dowling School
Located in Minneapolis’ Longfellow community, in the Cooper neighborhood, Michael Dowling School serves more than 500 students in grades K through 5. The school employs 32 full-time teachers, giving it a student/teacher ratio of about 16:1.
The school was named for Michael Dowling, a former school principal, bank president, mayor and, finally speaker of the Minnesota House.
Dowling is an urban environmental magnet school, so in addition to the core curriculum, the school features a strong environmental program for all grades.

Dowling receives two out of five stars at school ranking site SchoolDigger.com. It is ranked about mid-pack ― 408th of 806 public elementary schools in Minnesota. GreatSchools.org awards Dowling with seven out of a possible 10 stars.
In 2015, Dowling’s fifth graders lagged both the district and the state on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment-III math exams, with 57 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. The average for the district is 64.3 percent and 59 percent for the state.
