Minneapolis School of the Month: Washburn High School

This month, MinneapolisRealEstate.com takes a look at one of the city’s 10 public high schools, Washburn. Located in Minneapolis’ Tangletown neighborhood, the school is administered by Minneapolis Public Schools and serves 1,320 students with 64 full-time teachers. The student/teacher ratio at Washburn is about 20:1.

Curriculum and Activities

Aside from the core curriculum, Washburn offers International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme classes in math, Spanish, French, history, science, math and the arts. The school also offers a program for the gifted and talented and post-secondary enrollment options.

Students are invited to participate in the school’s clubs, such as ACE (Architecture-Construction-Engineering), Debate Club, Mountain Biking Team, Robotics, Yearbook and more.

Test Scores and Rankings

Washburn’s standardized test scores took a dip last year but rebounded this year to their highest scores ever.

On the math portion of the 2015 Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments Series III (MCA-III) exams, more than 43 percent of Washburn’s 11th graders met or exceeded the state standard. The district’s average was 27.8 percent and the state’s was 48.7 percent. Eleventh graders did even better on the reading section of the exams, with nearly half of them meeting or exceeding the standard, compared to 30.4 percent in the district and 57 in the state.

Where these students really shine, however, is in science, with 50.5 percent of 11th graders meeting or exceeding the state standard for the science exams, compared to 31.8 percent of the district’s and 54.6 of the state’s 11th graders.

School ratings site GreatSchools.org awards the school five out of 10 stars and SchoolDigger.com gives Washburn three out of five, ranking it 240 of 502 public high schools in Minnesota.

Washburn is holding its 8th grade open house on Thursday, November 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Here you and your student can learn about the courses offered, programs and club and tour the school.
