Day Tripping from Minneapolis

So, are the kids driving you nuts yet? Ah, take heart Mom or Dad – it’s almost over and they’ll soon be back in school. If you want to help them work off some of their pent up energy as we wind down the holidays, how about a day or weekend family trip? Read on for some ideas.

Stillwater

A quick 30 minutes east of the city will put you in just about everyone’s favorite Minnesota city, Stillwater. If you want to make a weekend of it, there are plenty of bed and breakfasts and other lodging opportunities in this adorable town.

Bring the skis, though, because you’ll want to check out the trail at Brown's Creek. Nearly six miles long, the trail is suitable for all skill levels.

When you’re done being outdoorsy, Stillwater offers a plethora of indoor activities, whether it’s shopping, dining or taking in some local history, the family will love this day trip.

Afton State Park

About a half hour drive south of Stillwater will put you at Afton State Park. It features year-round backpack camping, snowboarding and cross-country skiing.

The park is amazing, with 18 miles of cross-country ski trails over some pretty incredible landscapes. There’s a 2.5 mile loop for beginners. You’ll need a ski pass for everyone 16 and over.

Detroit Mountain

Definitely a family destination, Detroit Mountain in Becker County offers downhill skiing, a tubing hill, cross-country ski trails and a terrain park. All are lighted for night use and there are instructors on staff if anyone in the family needs to take a lesson.

The lodge has a café for when you get hungry (beer and wine for Mom and Dad!) and free wireless Internet if you don’t feel like being outdoors.

Detroit Mountain is northwest of Minneapolis and it’ll take you a little more than 3 hours on US-10 W to get there.

Happy New Year from the Kris Lindahl Team with RE/MAX Results!
