Last year, Minneapolis was number three on Central Connecticut State University’s list of Most Literate Cities. This year? Number one. That’s right, Minneapolis has been named America’s Most Literate City. Not only that, but with St. Paul coming in at number four, Minnesota is the only state with two cities listed in the top five.

This is the 12th time  the survey has been published and Minneapolis interrupted Washington, D.C.’s four-year run as number one.

Rankings are determined by looking at six indicators of how a city’s citizens use literacy, including:

  • Educational attainment
  • Best sellers
  • Library resources
  • Periodical publishing resources
  • Newspaper circulation
  • Internet resources

Then they compare the statistics
