Minneapolis’ Anishinabe Academy is a magnet school that instructs children in grades Pre-K through 8. It focuses on Native American culture and language, although students of all cultures are welcome.
The school offers Ojibwe and Dakota immersion classrooms, special education, physical education, Native American culture class, native drum group and family nights.
The academy encourages parent participation through parent-involved leadership.
Students have access to a media center, reading and math coaches and tutors.
Staff is handpicked by the community and the school has been given the “freedom to develop a unique curriculum under the guidance of the school district and in conjunction with Native American organizations, staff and parents,” according to the school’s website.
The core curriculum is the same as that of all schools in the district, with the addition of Native language and culture. Anishinabe Academy’s student enrollment demographics include 79 percent Native American children.
You’ll find Anishinabe Academy at 3100 E. 28th Street in Minneapolis. Reach the school by phone at 612.668.0880.
